A paralyzed nonagenarian, Mr. Michael Nwankwo-Nwoye has appealed to Anambra State Government and the Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Police and SARS Brutalities, Extra-Judicial Killings and other Related Matters, to give his family deserved justice on the death of their son, late Mr. Obiorah Nwankwo-Nwoye, who was allegedly murdered by the defunct SARS in 2007.
Mr. Nwankwo-Nwoye made the appeal before the panel in Awka during its sitting.
Correspondent, Emmanuel Okonkwo reports that the nonagenarian, who hails from Abba in Dunukofia Council Area, went down memory lane on how his late son, Mr. Obiorah Nwankwo-Nwoye, whom he described as the bread winner of his family was illegally arrested by officials of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, when he visited from Lagos and since then, has not been seen till date.
He explained that he sustained the injury that landed him on a wheelchair, when he fell from a four story building as he resorted to carpentry job to assist his family after the killing of his son by the SARS.
Another petitioner from Nise, Mr. Ifeanyi Okpagu eighty-three, whose son, late Mr. Ugonna Okpagu was also allegedly arrested and killed by SARS, called on the Panel to do all it could to give him justice as his family has been left without any helper since the demise of their son.
While Mrs. Adaoba Uduaka from Umuoba-Anam, Anambra East Council Area, explained how her husband was illegally killed by the Police in 2003, Mrs. Ngozi Ezeobi from Nise in Awka South Council Area, narrated how her two sons were unlawfully arrested and murdered by the defunct SARS in 2007, and expressed hope that the state government will give them justice after the panel’s assignment.
The hearing, held at the ASATU Hall, Government House Awka, attracted petitioners and families of victims of the Nigeria Police Brutality and Extra-Judicial Killings from across the state, who seek justice for selves and for their loved ones.
The panel presided over by Justice Veronica Umeh was able to review twenty petitions during the sitting.
