Catholic women all over the world are today celebrating Mothers’ Sunday.

Mothers’ Sunday, which began with a religious purpose, was originally a day to honour and give thanks to the Virgin Mary, also known as Mother Mary.

It was also a day when people  visit their “mother” church, which fell on the forth Sunday of Lent.

Today, the old traditions of Mothers’ Sunday in the Church were merged with the new traditions of buying gifts and cards for mothers.

While the new traditions of Mother’s Day allow Christians to celebrate their mothers and grandmothers for everything they do for them, they should also remember Mary, the Mother of God, who is also their Mother.

Speaking on the importance of the day, a Catholic Priest from Ekwulobia Diocese, Reverend Father Kenneth Udokogu, charged mothers to take the Blessed Virgin Mary as their role model.

Reverend Father Udokogu enjoined them to learn from the zeal and commitment of the early Christians, who experience joy in serving God.

Also speaking, a former Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr. Ego Uzoezie, who described the day as very important to women, said womanhood is a vocation filled with spectacular assignments with humility.

Dr. Uzoezie while calling for thirty-five percent women affirmative in elective positions across all levels of government, charged women to brace up to the roles of motherhood.

The State Woman Leader, All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Mrs. Gloria Udevi noted that women in the state are blessed with the gift of the Governor’s wife, Dr. Ebelechukwu Obiano, who is passionate about their welfare, adding that she touched too many lives through her pet project, CAFE.

Mrs. Udevi charged women to emulate Mother Mary, whom according to her, the Governor’s wife is living out Her virtues.

In their separate speeches, the wife of the traditional ruler of Uke Community, Lolo Maureen Agbala and her Mkpunando-Otu Aguleri counterpart, Lolo Christiana Mbanefo asked women to portray the beauty of motherhood by avoiding indecent dressing even as they lamented inflation rate in the country, especially food items hence the need for all  to heed to Ugbo-Azu-Uno initiative of Governor Willie Obiano to achieve food security.

Correspondent, Amaka Chibuzor-Okoye reports that special Holy Mass would be celebrated in all the parishes to honour the women.
