Anambra State government has warned shop owners and traders against non-compliance with the mandatory monthly sanitation exercise.

The Director Environmental Health in the Ministry of Environment, Mrs Edith Ike, gave this warning yesterday during the April edition of the exercise when staff of the Ministry monitored  the level of compliance of shop owners around the various markets and streets in Awka.

ABS correspondent, Chibuzor Obidike reports that places visited were Arroma Junction through Cadlands Road, Ifite Awka, Amaenyi Awka, Zik’s Avenue among others.

Several shops were either closed or opened without their owners engaging in the sanitation exercise, leaving their surroundings littered with dirts.

The Ministry equally used the period to sensitize the people on the dangers of indiscriminate dumping of refuse, through sharing of stickers and rewarding residents that complied with the sanitation exercise with gift items

The Director, Environmental Health in the Ministry, Mrs Ike said that the approach of appreciating patriotic residents of the state for a job well done is to instill the idea of cleanliness on the people.

Speaking to ABS, a shop owner, Mr Onyemechi Meluiwu and a Tricycle operator, Mr Chukwueme Ofokanze, while commending the state government for their efforts in maintaining cleanliness in different parts of the state, assured that they will carry the campaign of adherence to the monthly sanitation exercise to their localities.

At Ifite Awka, Mrs Okechukwu Okoye lamented constant dumping of refuse in  drainage system  by residents and traders who expected the rains to dispose them thereby blocking the water ways and suggested institution of a task force to monitor and penalise individuals found wanting while a student, Ikechukwu Sunday suggested collaboration between landlords and shop owners to sanction tenants  and traders whose drainages are blocked with refuses.
