Igbo Women Elders Council, a group affiliated to the Ohaneze Ndigbo, has appealed for calm and peace  after Monday’s attack on some residents at Awkuzu, in Oyi Local Government Areas of the State.

ABS Correspondent, David Okpokwasili reports that the group made the call at an International Conference they held in Awka.

Igbo Women Elders Council acknowledged that Federal Government’s unfair and compromising approach to managing security situations in the country, especially ethnic- related  killings and farmers-herders crises in different parts of the country, must have led to the escalation of violence, especially in the South East region recently.

Reading out their stand, the President General of the Council, Chief Mrs. Chika Ibeneme said they will set up a Committee that will have mandate to identify different dimensions of the crisis, engage and interface with relevant stakeholders in order to nip it in the bud.

She described Ndigbo as a people who hold sanctity of the land and sacredness of human life in high regard, and appealed to the youths to eschew violence and avoid actions that will further deteriorate the security situation in the region and the country large.

Another member of the group, Dr. Flora Ilonzo called on the Federal Government to uphold equity and due process by releasing those who are illegally detained following the 2020 EndSars protest, even as she appealed to politicians in Anambra to shun violence, as the State prepares for her November 6 governorship election.

The Igbo Women Elders Council draws its membership from accomplished Igbo women from all walks of life, who have attained the age of sixty and above, and are from all the Igbo speaking States of the Federation, including Delta and Rivers.
