Anambra International Cargo and Passenger Airport at Umueri has recorded its first commercial flight operations.

Governor Willie Obiano witnessed the test flight operation at the airport where three Aircraft landed yesterday.

Of the three Aircraft two are from the Air Peace airlines, owned and operated by Anambra-born Chief Allen Onyema, who operates the only Nigerian indigenous international air carrier.

Government House Correspondent Ejike Abana reports that Anambra airport geared towards boosting economic activities and revolutionizing import and export businesses in Nigeria,  has two hundred meters by three hundred meters apron, sixty meter width, three point seven kilometer runway with one kilometer RESA each at both ends of the runway, a thirty-four point meter control tower, the tallest in Nigeria, terminal building, park for up to seven hundred and fifty cars, two taxi ways, safety zones, diversion channel, water and fire stations emergency road, energy operation centre, power House and other security features.

Governor Obiano, who described the project as revolutionary said that it took the government fifteenth months to achieve the feat.

He remarked that the airport glows above the doom of the COVID-19 pandemic, emphasizing that no money was borrowed for the project.

While recalling  that the dream for airport in Anambra began almost thirty years ago, starting from Oba but was never realized, the Governor highlighted the vision and mission of his administration, saying that it is a direct bridge between Anambra and the world.

He expressed optimism that in no distant time, the airport will be the busiest in Nigeria and commended the zeal and determination of the various construction companies, Commissioner for works and team, the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Umueri, Nsugbe and Nteje people.

The Commissioner for Works, Mr Marcel Ifejiofor said that the airport is a promise made and fulfilled pointing out that the airport can take any aircraft in the world.

He appreciated the Governor for the vision, emphasizing that all the equipment have been paid for, just as he noted that the airport will be commissioned soon.

Also speaking, Chief Allen Onyema who joined the first aircraft shed tears on arrival because the dream has become a reality.

He thanked the Federal government for approving the airport, saying that it is a testament that facilities in the airport are of  accepted standards.

While pointing out that airport will be beneficial not only to the South-East but the Country at large , Chief Onyema said that the airport will enhance the growth of  economy.
