Anambra State Library Board has commemorated, this year’s Book Day with a call on parents to inculcate, reading habit in their children.

Correspondent, Njideka Okoye reports that the celebration held at the Professor Kenneth Dike Library Awka, with theme, “Share a Story” centered on importance of reading and promotion of Igbo Language and Culture.

Speaking at the event, the Director, Anambra State Library Services, Dr. Nkechi Udeze called on residents of the state especially students to make good use of the state library, which according to her, is well equipped with books and Information Communication Technology.

 

Dr. Udeze, who frowned that parents and guardians are putting less or no effort in teaching their children Igbo Language and Culture said gone are the days when children sit round an elder to listen to folk tales.

On her part, the chairman on the occasion, Mrs. Ngozi Osuchukwu, from Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, encouraged the students to be serious with their studies, while noting great difference between a literate person and an illiterate in every life endeavour.

Some of the students including Chibunkem Okereke and Chiamaka Nnoruka, thanked the state government for equipping the library and the organizers of the event, testifying that they learnt a lot.

The Book Day celebration climaxed with presentation to students, displays by different schools, riddles, jokes and folk tales among others.
