The Commissioner for Basic Education Professor Kate Omenugha has received in audience the winner of the National Maltina Schools Games competition held at Athletics pitch Yaba College of Technology, Lagos.

 

The national competition held March last year was organized by the National schools Sports Federation NSSF.

 

Education Correspondent, Theophilus Ukoha who witnessed the event at conference hall Ministry of Basic Education, Jerome Udorji Secretariat, Awka  reports that    Master Onyebuchi Nnebedum, a student of Christ Redeemers College Amesi, Aguata Local Government Area and a member of the Anambra State contingent to the 2020 edition of the National Maltina Schools Games held between 8 to 12th March 2020, won two gold medals in javelin and shot-put, senior boys, events, making Anambra State the only State that won two gold medals in the competition and qualifies Master Onyebuchi as the State Star best athlete.

 

Receiving the athlete Master Onyebuchi who was accompanied by his school mates, his father Mr Nnebedum, Principal Mrs Bibian Onwuka, Games Mistress Adaeze Eze and Director of Sports PPSSC, Victoria Nwobi, Commissioner Omenugha said Master Onyebuchi has joined the list of Anambra students who won different categories of laurels both in national and international competitions, saying he would be honored by the Governor in no distant time, assuring him that his picture will be hanged on the ministry billboard.

Professor Omenugha urged Master Onyebuchi to work extra hard on his studies not letting alone his love for sports so as to win more laurels in future competitions.

 

Earlier, the President Nigeria School Sports Federation, NSSF, Mrs Olabisi Joseph, represented by Vice President Pastor Emmanuel Ebong, said the competition is organized to encourage young talented boys and girls to participate in sports activities thereby channeling their talents into meaningful and productive ventures.

 

In his speech, the representative of Maltina group and Regional Manager Anambra State Mr Olusegun Odejobi, thanked NSSF, Ministry of Basic Education, and sports directors saying the athlete need to be trained  more for future competition.

 

The Anambra State School Sports Coordinator Mrs Justina Okafor, expressed confidence that Onyebuchi will do better in future competitions.

 

 

Both the Principal Christ Redeemers College Amesi, Mrs Bibian Onwuka, Games Mistress Adaeze Eze and the father of the winner Mr Nnebedum expressed happiness for the award.

 

Master Onyebuchi Nnebedum having received a cash prize of five hundred thousand naira, two lap tops, Maltina branded sports wears, said he feels on top of the world assuring to do better in future competitions.

 

The event which had in attendance the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Basic Education Barrister Nwando Obiano, other Directors in the Ministry, the Public Relations Officer of the ministry, Nnaemeka Egwuonwu, climaxed with presentation of symbolic cheque to the winner.
