Some Stakeholders in Anambra State have called on the citizenry to comply with tax payment to help build a viable economy for both the State and the Nigerian-Nation.

 

ABS correspondent Faith Onyemuche conducted an interview with some members of Onitsha Chamber of Commerce Industry, Mines and Agriculture to ascertain the level of compliance by the citizenry.

 

Speaking during the interview, the President Onitsha Chamber of Commerce Industry Mines and Agriculture Mr Chris Ukachukwu, stated that the level of compliance by individuals and companies to tax payment is very poor despite series of seminars held to sensitize the public on the need to pay tax and other government approved levies.

Mr Ukachukwu a Pharmacist said the association organizes seminars to sensitize the people about tax payment, benefits and penalties of not paying tax and also prepare the mind of Onitsha business community to appreciate the importance of Record keeping which is vital in tax payment.

 

On his part, a Chartered Accountant, Chief Kelvin Obieri said failure of some businesses in the country have been traced to non-payment of tax, pointing out that when business owners pay tax, government will ensure conducive business environment for transactions.

 

Also speaking another stakeholder, Mr Uche Akpakama said individuals and companies feel a lot of burden when it comes to tax payment as a result of poor economy  but stressed that citizens can only hold leaders accountable when they pay tax.

 

According to Mr Apakama, a Pharmacist, when people pay tax, they will be conscious of the activities of the leaders and can hold them accountable.

The stakeholders encouraged citizens to be contributors to the economic growth of the state and nation by paying their tax, stressing that no government can do much without generating Revenue Internally.
