South Africa has confirmed four cases of a new COVID variant that first appeared in India.

All four were people, who had a history of travel to India.

They were found in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

The health ministry said eleven cases of the UK variant B.1.1.7 have also been detected.

South Africa is the hardest hit nation on the continent, recording more infections and deaths than any other country there.

According to Johns Hopkins University data, the country has reported nearly one point six million cases and a death toll of more than fifty-four thousand.
