Anambra state Government has awarded contract for the construction of all roads leading to refuse disposal sites in the state to enhance speedy evacuation of wastes.
The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Environment Dr. Emmanuel Okafor disclosed this while speaking to Newsmen in Awka on the readiness of the Ministry to protect the environment.
Staff reporter Njideka Okoye reports that Dr. Okafor revealed that work has commenced at Nkwelle Ezunaka dump site and enjoined Ndi Anambra to be conscious of their environment and evacuate their wastes appropriately, as the Ministry has set up task force to penalize defaulters in Onitsha, Awka, Nnewi, Ekwuluobia and Umunze among others.
The Permanent Secretary noted that they have met and will still meet with Town Unions in the State to ensure that every Community consistently desilt their drainages for easy flow of flood.
The Director, Environmental Health Pollution Control, Mrs. Edith Ike said the Ministry has continued to create awareness to remind people of the need to clean their environment, especially during the monthly sanitation, and warned people who connect domestic water and sewage to drainages to stop forthwith or face the wrath of the law.
Speaking on the health implications of poor environment, the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health, Mr. Nwabueze Linus made it clear that cleanliness is one of the prerequisites for healthy living.
For the Director, Anambra Nursing Services, Mrs Pepetual Anene said packing and keeping of dirts at the wrong sites, give rooms for infections and diseases and urged residents of the State to improve on their sanitation and hygiene practices.
