Sixty newly recruited midwives under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund in Anambra State are currently undergoing five-day training in Awka.
The training is been organized by the Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency in collaboration with National Primary Health Care Development Agency.
Emmanuel Chigbata reports that while welcoming the participants, the Executive Secretary, Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Chioma Ezeyimulu announced that every ward in the state now has a functional primary health care centre and urged the participants to work in line with the principles of primary health care.
Revealing that the State now has three hundred and thirty- two wards being used under Basic Health Care Provision fund, Dr. Ezenyimulu stated that lack of skilled hands at the point of labour and childbirth contribute to a high percentage of maternal and infant mortality.
She said that at the end of the workshop that the newly recruited midwives will be posted to various facilities to ensure skilled labour in the facilities while imploring the participants to give in their best throughout their stay in the workshop programme.
Declaring the programme open, the Board Chairman Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Professor Jeoshephat Ogbuagu urged the participants to maintain optimal professionalism as soon as they are deployed to their various facilities.
In their various addresses, the Programme Manager, National Emergency Maternal and Child Health Intervention Centre, Dr. Valentine Obiejekwu, and the Permanent Secretary, Anambra State Ministry of Health, Mr. Linus Nwankwo, maintained that the major thrust of the training is to acquaint the new midwives on suitable strategies to combat against maternal and infant mortality.
Speaking on behalf of the Midwives, one of the participants, Mrs Juliet Ifechukwu, promised to put in her best in the course of her duty.
