The United Nations, through the Federal Government-IFAD-VCDP has organized a-one-day Rural Community Stakeholders Food System Dialogue aimed at designing a probable future implementation programme.
The dialogue, which is the second in its series after inception dialogue and finally consolidatory dialogue that will take place at New York in the United States, simultaneously took place across the eight selected States in Nigeria including Anambra.
Agric correspondent Ebele Ezeh reports that while declaring the dialogue open at Awka North Local Government Area headquarters Achalla, the curator and leader of a- three- man team from Abuja, Dr. Chyka Unamma said that the dialogue was aimed at identifying practice and policies that will have greatest impact on the achievement of the desired vision with local food systems.
Dr Unamma described the dialogue as an opportunity for all stakeholders to agree on how they will work together to create food system that are both sustainable and equitable, align with sustainable development goals and suited to the needs of future world and its people.
Speaking during the dialogue , the Transition Committee Chairman for Awka North Local Government Area, Mr Ferdinand Onwuje, who spoke through the Head of Local Government Administration, Comrade Jonathan Uzoigwe called for scholarships for intending Agric students and easy access to loans.
The traditional ruler of Achalla, Igwe Sunny Nwokedi, represented by one of his Advisers on Security, Mr. Peter Nwadinigwe, who encouraged his subjects to unfold the challenges militating against their farming activities as no one will be victimized since it is for the interest of the whole world, asked government at all levels to declare State of emergency in agriculture.
While brain storming on nutritious food, the Secretary, Association of Organic Agriculture Practitioners of Nigerian Anambra State chapter, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Uzoka called for the provision of quality planting materials, use of Organic fertilizers and packaging devoid of chemicals for a healthier lifestyle.
At the end of the dialogue facilitated by the State Programme Co-ordinator, Federal Government-IFAD-VCDP, Mr. Nnamdi Agwuncha and attended by farmers, processors, marketers, agro dealers, food vendors the Clergy, health officers and the civil society organizations among others, they unanimously agreed on so many points including transition to mechanized farming, land development and quality regulation centres.
They also adopted mix cropping, awareness creation, and involvement of wealthy individuals in agriculture among other numerous resolutions.
