Anambra State Government has commended the UNICEF and WHO for continued interventions in promoting the health and well-being of children and women in the State.
The Executive Secretary Anambra State Primary Healthcare Development Agency, Dr Mrs Chioma Ezeanyimulu, gave the commendation ahead of Breastfeeding awareness campaign coming up next week in the State.
She said Statistics show that breastfeeding within the first hour of birth, followed by exclusive breastfeeding for six months, and continued breastfeeding for up to two years or beyond, is ideal for well-being of mother and child.
Meanwhile, reports said in Nigeria, one in eight children do not reach their fifth birthday, and three in ten children are stunted, due to poor breastfeeding.
This year’s world breastfeeding week with the theme “protect breastfeeding, a shared responsibility”, aims at revisiting commitments made at the start of this year, which include that employers allow women the time and space needed to breastfeed, and give parental Leave, with long maternity leave.
