The Anambra State House of Assembly has passed a resolution directing the Director of Estate Service, Anambra State Housing Development Corporation, Mr. Anthony Nwofor to refund the family of the late Chief Marcel Ejikeme, the sum of thirteen point five million naira he collected from the deceased as payment for a failed land business the corporation did with him.
House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim reports that the House passed the resolution during yesterday’s plenary in Awka.
The House also directed him to ensure that the refund payment is effected not later than six weeks from the date of adoption of the report of its committee on public Petitions about the matter and evidence of the refund made available to the House through the Clerk.
Speaker of the House, Right Honourable Uche Okafor read out the resolution to the House, while the lawmakers supported it through a voice vote.
Giving background of the matter before the House, the Chairman House Committee on Public Petitions, Chief Emeka Aforka explained that the petitioner, Late Ejikeme bought plot four-three-two at Ngozika Housing Estate, Awka from the Corporation through Mr. Nwofor.
When he made attempt to take procession of it, he was chased away by security personnel who told him that the land is not free from encumbrance.
Honourable Aforka said that when his committee investigated the matter, they discovered that the land is encumbered as it has been granted to a church group by the state government before it was resold to the deceased.
He went further to say that when the respondent, Mr. Nwofor appeared before his committee on fact finding, he assured them that if the House finds out that the land transaction is faulty, he will refund the petitioner the money he paid for it.
He also thanked the House for doing Justice to the matter.
