University of Nigeria Alumni Association, Onitsha Branch, says it will organize an inaugural lecture series in honour of the late Professor Dora Akunyili.
Queen Anigbogu reports that the University of Nigeria Alumni Association, Onitsha Branch, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to the Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Mr C. Don Adinuba in his office at the Jerome Udoji Secretariat complex in Awka.
The president of the association, Mrs Lizzy Anyaonu, said they came to inform the Commissioner of their forthcoming Founder’s day ceremony where they will commence inauguration of Professor Dora Akunyili Memorial Lecture.
She explained that the philosophy behind their role model project was to promote healthy citizenship among Nigerians towards sustainable development of the nation.
Mrs Anyaonu a lawyer commended Governor Willie Obiano who she said has set the ball rolling by his noble move of renaming the Women Development Centre after Professor Dora Akunyili and declaring the birthday of late Nnamdi Azikiwe a Work -Free day in Anambra State.
Responding, the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Mr Adinuba stated that having the right values is the fundamental difference between developed society and under developed one.
He noted that Governor Willie Obiano has passionate belief in social values that is why he renamed the Women Development Centre after Professor Dora Akunyili, noting that he has honoured some sons and daughters of the State and will still honour more.
The Commissioner revealed that the Governor will also honour the late Pius Okigbo, Professor Chike Obi and several other Ndi Anambra adding that the State honours people with intellect and values.
He agreed to give the University of Nigeria Alumni Association the assistance they requested to see to the success of their forthcoming Founder’s day ceremony.
In his remarks, the chairman, Local Organizing Committee of the event, Mr Emmanuel Chiadi, expressed their solidarity with Governor Obiano on his strategic initiatives to re-engineer and re- position the State.
