The Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Finance and Appropriation has assured the Anambra State Internal Revenue Service of its partnership to end the diversion of state revenue to private pockets to improve the internally generated revenue base of the State.
The Chairman of the Committee, Chief Obinna Emeneka gave the assurance when the key officers of the agency appeared before the committee at the State House of Assembly for the assessment of their 2021 budget.
House of Assembly Correspondent, Chukwuemeka Modilim was there and reports that Chief Emeneka who emphasized that revenue generation is key to the realization of government vision for the state, assured that his committee would assist AIRS to get certain percentage from all the revenues they collect as stipulated by the Anambra State Revenue Administration Law to enable them discharge their duties creditably.
The committee asked them to fine tune more strategies to generate more revenue for the state in 2022 and forward their work plan and list of revenue windows to them so that they can make their own input.
On his part, the Chairman, Anambra State Internal Revenue Service, Dr. David Nzekwu who revealed that the agency has made progress in revenue generation since he assumed office, informed the committee that political connotation surrounding revenue generation makes it difficult for the agency not to realize the expected revenue and urged the Anambra State House of Assembly to assist them in that regard.
Dr. Nzekwu maintained that if the Board of Internal Revenue Service is made the first line charge in terms of revenue generation, as enshrined in the Anambra State Revenue Administration Law, the agency can improve on revenue generation.
Meanwhile, the Anambra State House of Assembly Committee on Public Account has called for the recruitment of more legal practitioners into the Ministry of Justice to meet the legal demands of the state.
The Committee which spoke through its Deputy Chairman, Dr. Timothy Ifedioramma made the call when the key officers of the Ministry of Justice appeared before the committee for the verification of their audited 2020 financial transactions.
In her remarks, the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Uju Nwogwu assured the committee that the Ministry would abide by its directive
