Awba-Ofemili Youth Assembly in Awka North Council Area has successfully held its maiden Youth Sensitization Rally and Summit, following the restoration of peace in the community by Governor Willie Obiano’s administration after years of Igweship tussle.

 

The summit, held at the Awba-Ofemili Civic Center, constructed with the second phase of the twenty million naira community choose your project initiative of the present administration, had in attendance, youths from within and outside the community including selected youths from Ugbenu and Ugbene communities and was part of initiatives for synergy and security networking.

Correspondent Ebele Ezeh reports that the event, which started with a sensitization rally, also featured lectures on the benefits of skills acquisition, consequences of drug abuse, cultism, violence and partisanship.

 

Addressing the participants, a former Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Nnamdi Mekoh, who described Awba-Ofemili Community as one that is naturally endowed, urged the youths to earn money all year round after their four months Rice farming activities by diversifying along the Agric value chain.

 

Mr. Mekoh appealed to them to endeavour to register and obtain their Permanent Voter’s Cards to enable them to discharge their civic responsibility during elections.

In his opening remark, the chairman of the occasion, who is also the convener, Mr. Bonaventure Muochebe an Engineer, who counted the losses the community recorded during the crisis and that of the youths in particular said they decided to came together under Awba-Ofemili Youth Assembly to assist the community’s reconciliatory committee, inaugurated by the Awba-Ofemili Elite to reconcile aggrieved parties to achieve lasting peace.

 

Mr. Muochebe, while begging the youths to cultivate the culture of peace, shun acts capable of truncating the restored peace and their future, charged them to always be a change agent where ever they may find themselves.

 

Earlier in a welcome address, the chairman, Awba-Ofemili Youth Assembly, Comrade Fidelis Mebene, who said that peace-building should be the responsibility of everyone, expressed their willingness to be used as instruments of peace-building at Awba-Ofemili Community, Awka North Council Area and Anambra State in general.

Delivering a lecture on dangers of drug abuse, the Head, Drug Demand Reduction, National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Dr. Mrs. Chinwe Thompson, who spoke through a clinical Psychologist in the Department, Dr. Wisdom Charles, enumerated various consequences of drug abuse and charged them to say no to drug use and save their dreams from destruction.

 

Stepping down the knowledge garnered at the national Youth Volunteer Programme/Hand washing and Clean Nigeria Campaign for COVID-19, organized by the federal Ministry of Water Resources for Anambra State youths, Mr. Justice Obinyelu  urged  them to always wash their hands regularly and shun open defecation, which he said, pollutes  water and causes cholera while Mr. Samuel Otugo advised them to remain focused to achieve their set goals.

 

For some of the participants, including Mr. David Aneke, Miss Ujunwa Udalor and Mr. Chibike Nwakonobi applauded Governor Wille Obiano for restoring peace in the community.
