Illegal dumping of refuse at roadsides, bus stops and other unauthorized spots, has become major issue of concern to human and its environment.

 

It is crystal clear that most people living around the dumping locations are ignorant of its health hazard other than the offensive odor it generates.

 

In this special report, correspondent Emmanuel Chigbata gathered that indiscriminate disposal of solid waste causes fatal diseases to human health.

 

Irrespective of several environmental laws and sensitization addressing cleaner and healthier environment, it has been observed that many people have continued to dump household waste into gutters, canals, highways, street corners and other available spaces.

 

In view of the above, unclean environment poses several harms and negative effects on human especially outdoor workers, while young children get easily infested with diseases.

 

Indiscriminate disposal of solid wastes equally expose human to environmental degradation such as drainage obstruction, widespread of infectious diseases, cholera, diarrhea and flooding.

 

It equally contributes to typhoid fever, waterway blockage, which leads to infestation of flies, ticks and breeding of mosquitoes that cause malaria and other plagues.

 

Speaking on the causes of indiscriminately dumping of refuse, the  Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer, Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, Dr. Chioma Ezenyimulu, listed inappropriate storage facilities, inadequate waste management and planning as well as wrong perception and nonchalant attitude of residents towards environmental cleaning and sanitation as major causes of the problem.

 

Also speaking, a resident of Ifite Awka, Mrs. Chika Oli, who called on residents to scale up sanitation exercise observed  at the last Saturday of every month to contain causes and spread of diseases in the society.

 

Another resident   of Agulu Community, Anaocha council area, Mr. Chinaza Chukwuma, urged the state government to intensify efforts towards sanitation exercise and provide adequate logistics where necessary, to avert the ugly trend.
