Anambra State Government has asked market unions to ensure that they enforce government’s order on the mandatory end-of-the month sanitation exercise by ensuring that all markets are locked throughout the hours of the sanitation, for traders to comply.
At Eke-Awka market, the sanitation officers led by Mr Paschal Okafor called the attention of the market union to the deplorable condition of the drainage systems along the market as some traders have chosen to trade on waterways and tasked the market union to take charge, by ensuring that traders no longer display their wares on those areas.
Mr Okafor lamented the low participation of residents in the sanitation exercise, and urged all stakeholders to key into the sanitation exercise by enforcing full compliance in their localities.
A former Chairman of Nkwor Enugwu-Ukwu market, Mr. Ugochukwu Maduka and the Chairman of Butchers Association Kwata, Awka, Chief Charles Okafor while assessing the sanitation officers in the market, said that the market has no waste bin which is why some traders dump waste unlawfully, especially during the night and appealed to the government to give them waste disposal receptacles.
A trader, Mrs. Ogechukwu Asogwa revealed that she was caught trading during the exercise and promised that she will henceforth ensure constant cleanliness and obedience to the law of the State, as regards environmental cleanliness.
Correspondent, Chibuzo Obidike reports that at various markets and streets visited such as Eke-Awka, Nkwo-Amaenyi, Afor Nawfia, Nkwor Enugwu-Ukwu, Zik Avenue, Enugu-Onitsha old road through Amawbia roundabout, Nawfia, the sanitation officers sensitized residents and traders on the best practices in waste disposal and cleanliness to ensure free flow of water as well as have a conducive atmosphere.
