There was an old saying that the wherewithal of a woman lies in her husband’s kitchen but the reverse seems to be the case in the modern women as education has taken centre stage.
To this effect Staff reporter Njideka Okoye samples people’s opinions on the importance of education of a girl child.
Knowledge they say is power and many are of the opinion that gone are the days when women are relegated to the background as they now play important roles in the family and the society at large if well trained.
The Deputy Chairman, Post Primary Schools Service Commission PPSSC Awka and member in charge of Awka Educational Zone, Lady Pat Offia believed that education of a girl child is important in any culture or society, as training of a girl child is training of a nation, noting that a girl child when educated, acquire knowledge and skills needed to better her life and that of her family members and as well, be better prepared to face the realities in the society and be a good wife and mother.
Lady Offia cited some great women of repute in Anambra state that were equally good wives and mothers to include the first female Governor of Anambra state, Dame Virgy Etiaba, Chimamanda Ngozi Edochie, late Professor Dora Akunyili, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu and a lot of other women and commended governor Willie Obiano whom she said is gender friendly by including women in the scheme of things in his administration.
On resumption of school, Lady Offia urged students to be of good behavior, observe school rules and regulations as well as COVID-19 safety protocols and take their studies seriously, urging parents to send their children to school as academic activities start on resumption day.
For an industrialist Mr. Mark Nwatu and a father Mr. Hyacinth Ateli, education of a girl child is of great gain as it will bring glory and recognition to the family, and noted that an educated and trained girl child takes good care of both families than some trained male children.
While Chief Dozie Nwakuche and Mr. Chukwuemeka Abua noted that an illiterate girl child is always a liability to her family and urged parents to always give consent to the training of their girl child for a better tomorrow.
