Nigerian Institute of Physics, NIP, has organized its 43rd annual conference in Awka with a call on the federal government to sponsor the institute on research works and other issues.
Over now to Emmanuel Okonkwo reports that the event, which has its theme as “Advances in Physics for Globalization and Sustainable Development, attracted fellows and members of the institute from across Nigeria, giving them the opportunity to deliberate on how to contribute their quota in addressing the challenges facing Nigerian nation, especially as it concerns the country’s economy.
Declaring the event open, the Vice Chancellor of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Professor Charles Esimone, who spoke through the Deputy Vice Chancellor Academics, Professor Frederick Odibo, commended the institute for choosing the university for the event, and asked them to endeavour to proffer solutions to some of the problems presently facing Nigeria, at the end of the conference.
In his address, the President, Nigerian Institute of Physics, Professor Hyacinth Aboh, who described Physics as the soul and king of sciences, and a discipline that explains humanity, pointed out that any nation that neglects adequate funding of teaching, learning, research and other key engagements and activities involving physics does so at its perils, hence the need for Nigeria Government to as a matter of urgency, empower the Nigerian Institute of Physics to facilitate improvement of the study of Physics at basic levels and physics researches.
Speaking, the chairman, Local Organizing Committee, Professor Tony Nwokoye pointed out that the annual conference was primarily aimed at projecting Physics and enlightening the masses on the importance of Physicists in the society, and noted that the earlier the federal government starts recognizing the efforts of NIP in national problem solving, the better for the country.
The institute during the event presented awards of excellence to its supporters including Professor Esimone and the Deputy Corps Marshall, Victor Nwokolo, among others.
Students that performed creditably in a nationwide quiz organized for secondary schools by the NIP this year also received prizes at the event.
