Igboukwu Catholic Community has honoured its octogenarians for their services to God and humanity.
The event, which started with a Pontifical High Mass, officiated by the Catholic Bishop of Ekwulobia Diocese, Most Reverend Peter Okpaleke, at Saint Michael’s Catholic Church Igboukwu, attracted people from all walks of life. Blessing Uchendu reports that it was a moment of celebration and thanksgiving as families of over sixty octogenarians, including that of an eighty-four-year-old Mrs. Celina Onuegbu thanked God for the gift of longevity.
In a homily, Bishop Okpaleke, who prayed for more years upon the lives of the celebrants, said longevity comes only from God and advised younger people to learn to live upright lifestyle.
In his remark, the Parish Priest, Reverend Father Jude Offodum, who described the event as the maiden edition said it was aimed at honoring the aged for the privilege of longevity.
One of the celebrant’s children, Mr. Uchenna Onuegbu expressed joy for being part of the celebration and described her mother as a role model extolling her virtues of resilience, industry and uprightness.
Other relations of Mrs. Onuegbu, including Reverend Sister Uche Onuegbu, Lady Uju Ifediba, Mr. Ifeanyi Okeke and Mr. Chukwuka Okoye described her as a woman of immense faith, who through her Christian lifestyle trained her children in godly way.
Responding, Mrs. Onuegbu, while thanking God for the gift of long life, also thanked her children and everyone, who came to celebrate with her, praying God to reward them immensely.
The Pontifical High Mass featured special prayers, presentation of awards and celebrations for Mrs. Onuegbu at her compound.
