Miss Jane Umekeje of Carol Standard Convent, Ichi, has won the overall best of the Archbishop Alexander Ibezim’s Provincial Mathematics Quiz Competition for Senior Secondary Schools.
Master Richman Favour of Bishop Crowther Seminary, Awka and Miss Mmesoma Umenne of Saint Mary the Virgin Convent, Ufuma, took second and third positions respectively.
Correspondent Amaka Chibuzor-Okoye reports that Archbishop Alexander Ibezim’s Provincial Mathematics Quiz Competition, initiated to improve the teaching and learning of Mathematics in all mission schools in the nine dioceses that make-up the Niger Province, is geared towards eliminating Mathematics phobia and to promote excellence in the lives of the students.
The quiz competition, which was also initiated to reposition the standard of education, was designed to motivate students and bring them at par with their counterparts across the globe for national and international competitions.
Addressing the gathering after presenting the students with awards during provincial council meeting at Cathedral Church of Saint James the Great, Atani, Most Reverend Ibezim said that the core mandate of mission schools is to improve students standard both spiritually and academically, hence the quiz competition.
He noted that the competition has ignited reading culture in the students and called on parents and guardians to sit up, monitor and raise excellent students.
The Provincial Education Secretary, Province of the Niger, Venerable Ifeanyichukwu Umeh disclosed that one of the greatest challenges faced in schools is Mathematics phobia noting that when the students get it right, other subjects will be a work over.
In their separate speeches, the awardees, Miss Umekeje, Master Favour and Miss Umenne thanked Archbishop Ibezim for initiating the quiz which they said will spur them to study more having been exposed to the core aspects of Mathematics, calling on other students to study hard as education is the bedrock of the society.
The first position went home with two hundred and fifty thousand naira, the second received one hundred and fifty thousand naira while the third received one hundred thousand naira only, certificates were also presented to them.
