Citizens of Anambra State have expressed concern over the recent threat by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mallam Abubakar Malami SAN that the Federal Government might declare a State of emergency on Anambra if the spate of new violence continues in the State.

Correspondent, Emmanuel Chigbata who sampled people’s opinion reports that most of the people who spoke to the ABS in Awka, Onitsha and Nnewi, recalled that Anambra State has received tremendous landmark recognitions and awards in security of life and property through the Obiano led administration, describing Malami’s idea as uncalled for, since the state is known as the most peaceful in the country.

According to a business man, Mr. Damian Okwara, who opined that declaring  a state of emergency  in Anambra because of the recent killings will only intensify the suffering of masses as well as halt business activities in the State.

A transporter in Awka, Mr. Basil Chidi, pointed that before imposing state of emergency in Anambra, it should first be declared in northern parts of the country where insecurity is beyond control.

He stated that state of emergency will do no good to the state or resolve crisis situation, but pleaded with them to look inward and fish out those fermenting trouble in the state.

A resident in Amawbia, Mr. Chikelu Nwiwu, suggested that tightening security is the only solution now to avoid disaster in the nearest future and urged the Federal Government to look for other far-reaching measures to restore normalcy in the state.

A community leader at Nise in Awka South Local Government Area Chief Boniface Egbutu described the state of emergency being canvassed for by the Attorney-General of the federation and Minister of Justice Mallam Abubakar Malami SAN as uncalled for, and called on the federal government to seek ways of beefing up security in different parts of the country to guarantee safety of life and property.
