International Federation of Women Lawyers ,FIDA, Anambra State branch, has celebrated her 2021 FIDA week with presentation of awards to over twenty persons for their outstanding contributions to the association.
The event held at the FIDA Law Center Awka, featured Luncheon and other displays by the members of the association.
Staff reporter Njideka Okoye covered the event and reports tha among the award recepients were the Vice Chancellor Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Charles Esimone, former Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Professor Carol Arinze-Umobi, former chairperson FIDA Anambra Branch, Barrister Chineze Obianyo and Professor Okey Ikpeze.
Speaking at the event, the Anambra State Chairperson FIDA , Professor Ogugua Ikpeze, listed some of the achievements of FIDA to include building of a one storey FIDA Law house with different apartments, mediation, settlement of cases for widows and downtrodden in court free of charge and scholarships for among others.
She noted that they are committed to promoting, protecting and preserving the rights, interests and well being of women and children through the use of the legal framework to ensure they are free from all forms of discrimination, violence and abuse in the society.
In her address, the FIDA Week Chairperson, Magistrate Genevieve Osakwe stated that their primary goal is to protect victims of rape, stop maltreatment of girls, widows, children and orphans, urging victims of such to report any maltreatment or challenges they are having to FIDA Law center in Awka promptly for immediate intervention.
Also speaking, the chairman on the occasion Justice Pete Obiora who also represented the Anambra state Chief Judge Justice Onochie Anyachebelu for the award urged them to continue with the unity that has enabled then to achieve the fit, and charged them to increase the tempo in the fight against women oppression, children victimization and abuse as their primary responsibility.
A guest speaker at the event, Barrister Dickson Ubah who spoke on Global Transformation Through Gender Equity, Equality and Empowerment commended the association for its impact so far and stressed the need for women empowerment.
Some of the award recipients, including Prof. Esimone, Prof. Arinze-Umobi, Bar. Obianyo and Prof. Ikpeze applauded the members of the association and thanked them for the honour done to them.
Earlier, FIDA visited pediatric ward of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital Amaku, Awka, and donated an oxygen cylinder and other items to mark the FIDA week, where Professor Ikpeze stated that the children’s unit is FIDA care ward and revealed that they visited them last year and noticed their area of needs and promised to assist them.
Presentation and displays by the members of FIDA formed the highlights of the celebration.
