The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has commenced the distribution of sensitive materials across the twenty-one Local Government Areas of Anambra State, for this Saturday’s governorship election.
The sensitive materials include the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, B-VAC, ballot booklets, result sheets and other documentary materials to be used at each of the polling units.
Correspondent Daniel Ezeigwe reports that the materials had earlier been deposited at the Central Bank of Nigeria, Awka, from where they were brought out for intact assessment by political party agents, and then handed over to electoral officers for the twenty-one local government areas who will be escorted, alongside the materials, by security agents down to their respective Local Government Areas.
In an interview, the INEC National Commissioner in charge of Anambra election supervision, Mr Festus Okoye, said that adequate security has been provided to secure the materials at INEC offices in each Local Government Area while vehicles conveying them are electronically tracked to ensure that they follow an identified route to their destinations.
Mr Okoye a lawyer while stating that INEC is ready for the election and stated that seven Resident Electoral Commissioners are already in the State to take charge of three Local Government Areas each on the election day.
Speaking to journalists, the Director Electoral Operation, INEC, Mr Abdulrazak Yusuf said that the materials are uniquely designed for only their designated polling units, noting that the Commission also made provisions for replacements both for result sheets and ballot papers, in the case of damage or emergencies.
Assessing the process, the representative of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Mr Tony Ifeanya, that of the People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Dr Alex Obiogbolu and their All Progressives Congress, APC, counterpart, Mr Chukwuma Agufugo, each gave divergent views above the procedures
The INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner in Anambra State, Dr Nkwachukwu Orji, was also on ground to monitor the process.
