Anambra electorate, went to the poll yesterday to elect a new Governor who will take over from the incumbent Governor Willie Obiano on March 17, 2022.

 

Candidates from eighteen registered political parties are contesting the ballot, and according to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, over two point five million registered voters were expected to participate from across the State.

Prior to the exercise, arrangements were made by INEC, Police, other security agencies and stakeholders for a free, fair and credible poll.

Anambra State Governor, Chief Willie Obiano and his wife, Dr. Ebelechukwu, who voted in the election as early as twenty-five minutes past nine o’clock in the morning, at the Eri Primary School, Otuocha 1, polling unit 004, where there are one thousand one hundred and sixty-two registered voters, commended the process by INEC as easier unlike what it was in 2019.

 At 11:15 am, the Commissioner for Works, Engineer Marcel Ifejiofor called on the the Independent National Electoral Commission to fix the challenge as many people are unable to be captured on the BVAS machine at Polling Unit 011, Mgbailo Public Square, Ward One, Aguleri in Anambra East Council Area.

Many of the eligible voters across age brackets who turned out to exercise their franchise bemoaned the process which they adjudged as stressful because they could not be captured since morning.

However, Commissioner Ifejiofor was easily captured and he quickly cast his vote.

 Accreditation of voters in Onitsha North and South started around 9am with a reasonable turn out of registered voters especially in five polling units  at Metu Memorial Secondary School  and Polling units inside All Saints Primary School,Onitsha North.

However at All Saints Primary School,Onitsha,three Bimodal Voter Accreditation system deployed there were slowing down the accreditation by either hanging or rejecting both fingers and faces of voters severally before it finally worked.

The same was witnessed at Inland Revenue 2 polling unit 1.

The Bishop on the Niger, the Rt.Rev.Owen Nwokolo who spoke after casting his vote expressed  satisfaction with the process ,security and peace environment.

One of the registered voters rejected by the BVAS,Mr.Cletus Ezenwa was optimistic that he will vote and commended the orderliness of the exercise.

At about quarter past eight in the morning at Ezeuzu Junction ward zero two zero Awka, which has thirty-eight accredited voters, voters were seen hanging around; as INEC officials were seen getting ready for the exercise.

 

The Presiding Officer at the unit, Victor Madueke, expressed satisfaction with the turnout of voters and assured of readiness for a hitch-free election.

 

One of the voters, Mr. Obi Okafor, said they have come to perform their civic rights following assurances of safety by the government.

 

But a twenty-one-years old Chidiebube Okoye said he is saddened that he cannot cast his vote because his PVC was not out after he registered since June.

 

At Maternity Nibo, which had three polling units; voters turned out in their numbers to cast their votes.
