The Acting Youth Leader of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, Mr. Jones Onwuasoanya has praised what he described as, “the apparent impartiality of President Muhammadu Buhari and the Independent National Electoral Commission in the conduct of the Anambra governorship election”.
Speaking to journalists, Mr. Onwuasoanya said that his organization is satisfied with the conduct of the election so far, but regretted that the hitch experienced in deploying the BVAS may have discouraged a number of citizens who turned out to cast their votes.
According to him, so far, the exercise is not very disappointing and he believes that the results announced so far represent to a large extent the wishes of the majority of voters.
According to him, it was clear that the president allowed the electoral process to run its full course.
He said that preliminary reports from the Anambra Election Security Monitoring Committee set up by the organization to monitor the election also indicate that the “Independent National Electoral Commission were mostly impartial and security agents deployed to secure the election were mostly professional in discharging their duties”.
While this could be regarded as an improvement from previous elections, the organization said the INEC needs to work harder in ensuring that the BVAS work more efficiently in future elections.
He commended the Anambra Election Security Monitoring Committee led by Mazi Chukwuma Okpalaezeukwu for their efforts which he said contributed in no small measure to the successful conduct of the election.
The apex Igbo youth leader urged voters in Ihiala Local Government Area, where a supplementary election holds today, to participate actively, warning against any attempts to manipulate the process.
