Parent have been advised to ensure proper training of their female children in school before marriage.

 

The member representing Onitsha South Two constituency at the state House of Assembly and the Deputy Chief Whip, Honourable Beverly Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche gave the advice in Awka while speaking with our correspondent Njideka Okoye on the importance of girl child education in the contemporary society.

 

Honourable Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche who regretted that some girls even at university level drop out from school for marriage, and chose to be ordinary house wives, reminding them that the world is experiencing hardship, which means that both of them need to work hard to put food on the table of the family.

 

She urged parents to channel same energy, importance and resources they spend in training their male children also on their female ones, maintaining that training a female child is not waste of money but real investment.

 

Honourable Ikpeazu-Nkemdiche charged girls to have self-esteem and  sense of pride in them, pursue their education and become a voice in the society, citing some women who have made it in the society including Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala who is now the Director General World Trade Organization, Dame Virgy Etiaba, first female Governor in Nigeria, Professor Stela Okunna, first female professor of Mass Communication in Nigeria and herself, the third time house of Assembly member among many others advising girls to strive to write their names in gold.

 

On her part, a mother, Mrs Chinyelu Eze, urged parents to discourage their female children from early marriage without education or skills.

 

Mrs Eze stated that a well-trained girl child is beneficial to both her family and that of her husbands, advising them to focus on their education pursuit and other meaningful skills that will make them become important members of the society before marriage.
