Tomorrow, Friday, November 26, 2021, the world will stand still for the College of Health Technology, Obosi as she holds her 3rd Convocation Ceremony for its new graduates. Globally, the purpose of establishing health institutions is for teaching, learning and research to compliment institutional action and policies to create support for healthy communities.
Anambra State College of Health Technology, ASCOHT, Obosi, is such an institution, established by the Anambra State Government to train the much needed middle level manpower in the health sector to improve the services of both the Primary and secondary health institutions in the state in particular and Nigeria as a whole.
It had only two departments at inception, presently, the institution has six departments, including Medical Imaging Technology, Health Information Management, Environmental Health Technology, Pharmacist Technicians, Community Health Extension Workers, Medical Laboratory Technician programme and Medical X-ray Technician.
Established in 1992, Anambra State College of Health Technology, Obosi, which started in an L-shaped forlorn looking structure with few halls, has steadily evolved into a full-fledged health institution, competing favourably with other establishments of like objectives, anywhere in the country.
Since inception, ASCOHT, Obosi has been bedeviled by various challenges, including lack of accommodation, dearth of laboratories, equipment and reagents, lack of power and water supplies, low staff strength and insecurity. The school started with only two departments.
But all these are now history with the appointment of Dr. Robinson Mgbakaogu, a professional with administrative and large vision for excellence on February 14, 2013, as the Provost of the institution. Although the Anambra State College of Health Technology, Obosi has enjoyed the attention of successive administrations in the state, the Willie Obiano-led government took a special interest in the development of the health institution and exhibited a strong resolve to reposition it to the next level.
The appointments of an action ready Commissioner for Health, Dr Vincent Okpala and a young, ebullient, a cerebral Chairman of a proactive Governing Council, Dr Simeon Onyemaechi and Dr Robinson Mgbakaogu, brought the uncommon and unprecedented transformation in infrastructure, academics and the entire college environment to a crescendo.
Today, all the six departments have been fully accredited by their different Boards. This accreditation qualifies the college to start admitting students through the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), who will at the end, get the award of Higher National Diploma (HND) from NBTE. This means that its graduates can now participate in the mandatory National Youth Service Corp, for the first time since inception of the college.
To enhance the academic performance of the students, Anambra State School of Health Technology, Obosi has procured and installed standard laboratory equipment and accessories for all its departments.
The welfare of the staff is vital and the State government ensures the regular payment of salaries and pension to staff. Since 2014, some critical staff been have employed.
In a bid to improve the comfort and performance of staff and students, the accommodation challenges faced by them two years ago, has also been attended to with the construction and renovation of classrooms and dilapidated female hostel, tiling and furnishing of the entire administrative block, construction of eleven toilet facilities in offices of principal officers, Deans and Heads of Departments. Projectors and accessories were installed to aid teaching of students and the construction of a standard canteen and many more too numerous to mention.
As the Provost of the College, Dr. Robinson Mgbakaogu hosts the 3rd Convocation ceremony tomorrow, Friday, November 26, 2021, we enjoin all to join us in the event which will have the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano as the Chief Guest of Honour, Igwe Chidubem Iweka as the Royal Father of the Day, with Prof. Ifeoma Enenwani, of the Department of Medical Laboratory, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, delivering the Convocation Lecture.
