Psychotic Inmate, Others Regain Freedom as Anambra Chief Judge, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu Extends Jail Delivery Exercise to Nigerian Correctional Service, Medium Security Custodial Centre, Nnewi

Having spent six years in custody, and in consideration of his mental health condition, the Anambra State Chief Judge, Justice Onochie Anyachebelu, yesterday, granted bail to one Chikwado Ikwueze at the Nigerian Correctional Service, Medium Security Custodial Centre, Nnewi, as he extended his jail delivery exercise to the facility, in exercise of powers vested on him as the Chief Judge of the State.

Others include one Okwudili Mbanusi, who appeared in Court last in 2018 over alleged serial burglary, but has not perfected his bail conditions, as well as one Justin John, an armed robbery suspect who hails from Plateau State, and has been in detention for over three years following his inability to establish contact with family or relatives for perfection of his bail conditions.

The exercise, which has taken place at Medium Security Custodial Centres in Onitsha and Ekwulobia, will end at Awka facility.

In his opening remark before a Court session, the Anambra State Chief Judge, Justice Anyachebelu said that the exercise is part of activities to mark the 2021/2022 Legal year ceremonies, and is aimed at giving priorities to people who have spent long time in detention, women, inmates with medical conditions, juveniles, and at some intervals, cases lawyers have interests in.

He explained that the Court relies on its power to forgive, and the impossibility of continuing prosecution to set the inmates free.

The Assistant Comptroller of Corrections, in charge of Medium Security Custodial Centre, Nnewi, Barrister Raymond Okonkwo, who commended the visit, expressed hope that the exercise will be sustained and will go a long way in decongesting Nigerian correctional centers.

Correspondent, Joseph Egbeocha reports that cases bordering on murder, attempted murder, armed robbery, burglary, among others were entertained at the facility by the Chief Judge and other Judges from Ihiala and Nnewi Judicial Divisions.
