Nineth December each year is being observed as International Anti-Corruption Day.
United Nations Convention against Corruption emphasizes responsibility of government to put in place effective whistle- blower protection to ensure that persons who speak up are protected from retaliation for effective accountability and transparency towards a culture of integrity and fairness.
Correspondent Njideka Okoye who gave an insight on the importance of the day reports that the 2021 International Anti-Corruption Day seeks to highlight the rights and responsibilities of everyone who is tackling corruption.
A Social Analyst Mr Tochukwu Chidebelu said that corruption affects all areas of the society, noting that preventing corruption brings progress towards sustainable development, helps protect the planet, creates job, achieves gender equality and secures wider access to essential services like healthcare and education.
Mr Chidebelu noted that everybody has a role to play to prevent and counter corruption to promote resilience and integrity in the society, urging all to champion the course for a corruption free society.
A clergy and the vicar of Saint John’s Anglican Church Ikenga Umueri, Reverend Ikechukwu Anikpe who stated that corruption is a complex societal, political and economic phenomenon that affects all countries noted that to get it right, tackling corruption should start from those in leadership position as according to him, when they live by example the subjects would follow suit.
Reverend Anikpe highlighted factors that militate against corruption free society to include quest to acquire wealth, Fame, position among others and reminded people of the need to say no to corruption especially in a time like this to avert its effects.
Theme for this year’s celebration is “Your right, your role, say no to corruption”.
