National Orientation Agency has again organized a one day Security Sensitization and Re-orientation Programme against Drug Addiction, Kidnapping Violent Crimes and Insecurity.
The sensitization programme which has its theme as “Saving Our Youths and Protecting Our Communities” took place at the Amawbia town hall, Amawbia.
Our correspondent Chidinma Ikeanyionwu reports that while speaking on why it is important to save the youths, the keynote speaker and the State Director of NOA Barrister Charles Nwoji explained that drug addiction especially crystal methamphetamine popularly known as mkpurummiri among youths is an enabler for violent crimes and insecurity experienced in the society and called on all stakeholders to join hands in protecting their communities by coming up with measures that will put the scourge to an end.
In his paper presentation titled “Drug/Substance Abuse as an Enabler for Kidnapping, Violent Crimes and Insecurity” the Assistant Commander Narcotics, Nigeria Drug Law Enforcement Agency Mr Polycarp Duguba-Jens noted that although the most affected are the youths, older men also abuse the substance hence the need for the sensitization.
Mr Duguba-Jens who listed some of the reasons for the abuse to include availability of the substance and money, peer group pressure suggested ways of helping the affected to include handing them over to the drug enforcement agents whenever it is dictated, exposing their hideouts among others.
In his opening remark, the Chairman on the occasion and the PG Amawbia town union Chief Ebele Nwufo, who was represented by the Sec. Gen. Pastor Chris Onwugbolu commended the agency for their well thought out plan in curbing the menace ravaging communities and charged participants to step down the knowledge gained at the end of the program.
Climax of the sensitization program was the presentation of short drama by Theater for Development, showcasing the disadvantages of taking illicit drugs.
