Anambra State Association of Town Unions, ASATU has held a cultural fiesta to promote the rich Igbo culture, tradition and norms with the goal of educating the younger generations about their roots.

The programme which brings to the fore aspects of the Igbo heritage that are being neglected and may soon go into extinction was tagged “2021 ASATU Cultural Fiesta and Awards”.

It has as its theme ‘Re-invigorating Anambra Culture and Values”.

The event held at Dr Alex Ekwueme square Awka had all the communities in the State led by their Presidents-General, who showcased what their community were known for, Ndi Igwe and other chieftaincy title holders were gorgeously adorned in different cultural robes at the event.

Addressing the gathering, a former presidential aspirant, Professor Kingsley Moghalu said ASATU is embedded with local governance and the bedrock of community development and must remain promoters of peace, progress and development in the communities.

Professor Moghalu who spoke on the topic, “The Position of The Igbo in Nigeria”, said the South Easterners should move for constitutional restructuring, state policing and support the move for Ndi Igbo to become the next president of Nigeria, charged the association to expedite actions to see that Ndigbo should not be seen as second-class citizens in the country.

The Chairman, ASATU Board of Trustees, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene charged the Presidents-General to continue to promote justice, equity, fairness and peace in all their communities, and commended them for properly implementing the State Government’s twenty-million-naira Community Choose Your Project Initiative, even as he eulogized Governor Willie Obiano for championing community development with innovative policies and programmes.

Welcoming the gathering, the National President of ASATU, Barrister Titus Akpudo extolled the giant infrastructural development initiated by Governor Obiano’s administration, expressing belief that the incoming administration will continue where the Governor will stop adding that the cultural fiesta is all about the promotion of Igbo culture and traditions.

The cultural fiesta also witnessed presentation of awards to some deserving individuals who have distinguished themselves in various aspects of community service and equally to the past leadership of ASATU.

In his goodwill message after receiving an award of good stewardship, the Special Adviser to Governor Obiano on Local Government, Chief Alex Onukwue asked the Presidents-General to always support government in power, work in synergy with their traditional rulers and ensure that their community live in peace and harmony at all times.

Correspondent Amaka Chibuzor Okoye who covered the event reports that the Traditional Ruler of Omor, Ayamelum Local Government Area, Igwe Chidume Oranu who chaired the occasion was also made the National Patron of ASATU, while the National President Of ASATU, Women Wing, Lady Franca Nwigbo, the Special Adviser to Governor Obiano on Chieftaincy and Town Unions Matters, Barrister Vera Okonkwo among others attended the cultural event which climaxed with the traditional dance performances and masquerading.
