The College of Nursing Sciences, Saint Joseph’s Hospital, Adazi-Nnukwu in Anaocha Local Government Area has held her 2021 “Capping and Matriculation” ceremony for year one students of the institution.
Correspondent Joseph Egbeocha reports that of the seventy-eight Preliminary Training Session, students that enrolled in Nursing Department of the College, forty-one were successful, while in Midwifery Department, sixty-five of the ninety-eight were successful for the ceremony that commenced with a pontifical holy mass presided over by the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor.
Bishop Ezeokafor, in his homily advised the students to work with God in order to achieve set goals, and called for more seriousness in training of health workers.
While calling for more attention to various needs of the College, Bishop Ezeokafor enjoined nurses to continuously assert their position in providing quality healthcare services.
Anambra State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Vincent Okpala, represented by the Deputy Director of Nursing in the Ministry, Dr. Stella Ekweozor commended students, staff and management of the institution for passing through hurdles of accreditation, and urged the matriculants to remain focused in pursuit of their goals.
The Chief Medical Director of Chukwuemeka Odumegwu University Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka, Dr. Josephat Akabike, who recalled efforts made for the College to secure accreditation when he was the State Commissioner for Health, said the teaching hospital will continue to partner the College in training of students.
In her address, the Provost of the College, Mrs Francisca Atakulu said the institution, which commenced since 1938 as School of Basic Midwifery has secured accreditation to operate as College of Nursing Sciences, running basic programmes in Nursing, Midwifery and Post-basic Nursing concurrently, adding that based on the result of last accreditation exercise, the College has been granted full accreditation, with yearly intake of basic Midwifery students from sixty to hundred, basic Nursing students from fifty to seventy-five, in addition to twenty slots for Post-basic Nursing.
Administrator of the College, Reverend Father Jude Igboka, who thanked Bishop Ezeokafor and parents for believing in quality services being rendered at the institution, said success stories being recorded at the College are as a result of commitment of Management and Staff, as well as resilience of students of the institution.
Best matriculating students of the College, Miss Ifunanya Okpala from Nursing Department, and Chisom Iwuchukwu from Midwifery Department, who were capped by Bishop Ezeokafor, said hard work and prayer enabled them achieve the feat, urging fellow students to brace for academic excellence.
