Anambra State Commissioner for Trade and Commerce, Mr Uchenna Okafor says the State government will not allow the erection of any illegal structures in Markets.

Reacting to alleged attempt by some persons to erect illegal structures in some lines in Onitsha Main Market, Mr Okafor who described it as antics of some individuals as the election into the Market leadership is coming up in February next year, assured the traders of government’s support.

Meanwhile, traders from Zone two, front line, Zion line, good name and Jewelries Lines, had earlier staged a protest to Main Market white House against the attempt by certain persons to erect structures on top of weak existing ones.

Speaking on behalf of the traders, the Vice Chairman of Independent Line, Chief Olunna Eze and a business owner in the affected lines, Mr Ifeanyi Agbazionwu, said the existing structures were constructed in 1997 without any consideration of putting another structure adding that the lines are congested already which makes it difficult for people to do businesses.

They therefore appealed to Onitsha Main Market leadership and the government to come to their rescue.

Responding, the Executive Chairman of Onitsha Main Market, Mr Kenneth Onyeka said he had no idea of the development and assured the traders that the erection will never take place.
