The maiden edition of Agbana Umuawulu Unity Cup has kicked off at Ebe Avuja Stadium Umuawulu in Awka South Local Government Area.

It is part of activities marking this festive season and promoting unity and sportsmanship among youths of the community.

The tournament is being sponsored by Chief Azubuike Ekweozor.

Correspondent Emmanuel Chigbata reports that the first game was between Ezenwa and Onwaputa-Ifeadi Team as the kick off was performed by one of the officials of the tournament Mr Fidelis Nwoye.

The tournament was entertaining as both teams tried to outplay each other and exhibited their talents  in a manner that amazed the spectators.

The first half yielded no goal while the second half ended goalless  too after several struggles by both team which led to penalty.

Onwaputa Ifeadi team clad in blue and white jersey won the match during a penalty kick.

The sponsor of the tournament, Chief Ekweozor, said he had the interest of the youths of his community at heart and  a lover of sports, hence the rationale for sponsoring the programme which aimed at promoting peace and unity in the community.

Chief Ekweozor said the ongoing programme provides alternative platform for talented youths to exhibit their football skills and for grassroot football stars to have opportunities to explore the possibility of taking up international football career.

The Traditional Ruler of the community, Igwe Joel Egwuonwu, commended Chief Ekweozor for sponsoring the programme, which according to him, is another way of promoting unity, peace and love among the citizens of Agbana quarter and the Umuawulu at large

The Traditional Prime Minister of the Community, Dr. Emma Ezenwaji, who applauded the communal support of Chief Ekweozor, underscored the importance of sports especially at the grassroots level, pointing out  that promoting sports, inspiring young athletes, and increasing healthy competition among the youths would discourage them from social vices.

In an interview, the team leader of Onwaputa Ifeadi, the winning team, Chief Okechukwu Ekweozor who expressed happiness that his team won, assured to continue leading in subsequent matches.

The tournament is expected to end on first January 2022.
