Umuokpu, one of the villages in Awka community, has held the 2021/2022 Okolo N’Eche Obodo Football Championship as the Umuoga team went home with the trophy.

The event which took place at Community Secondary School Field, Umuokpu-Awka attracted sons and daughters of the community, among numerous others.

Correspondent Blessing Dennis tells reports that the football tournament sponsored by Chief Chineme Mike after a competitive group stage saw Akanato and Umuoga Teams battled for the  final championship which ended  one-one draw at full time and was decided by penalty shootout, in  which Umuoga team defeated Akanato seven-six to lift the trophy .

Chief Mike, who spoke through by Mr Emmanuel Chineme said he has the interest of the youths of his community at heart and is a lover of sports, noting that the tournament is aimed at promoting peace and unity in the community.

He expressed delight with the skills and spirit of the sportsmanship that exist in the teams and revealed that they have been able to harness young talents that will represent the community.

The President of Umuokpu village youths Mr Ephraim Ndife explained that the football tournament is an annual event celebrated yearly at the end or beginning of the year, aimed at bringing youths together to maximise their talents.

The President of Umuokpu village, Mr Alfred Oko, underscored the importance of sports especially at the grassroots level, pointing out that promoting sports, inspiring young athletes, and increasing healthy competition among the youths would discourage them from social vices.

In an interview, the captain of the winning team, Chukwuebuka Nwaeke who expressed satisfaction that hard work pays, appreciated the sponsor of the tournament, Chief Mike Chineme for his kind gesture towards the community.

Handing over the trophy, as well as cash donations to the teams, victory dance led by the youth president were the highpoint of the annual tournament.
