The Federal Government, through the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has distributed relief materials to over one thousand households devastated by flood and windstorm within Awka North and South Federal Constituency.
The distribution took place at the headquarters of the State Emergency Management Agency, SEMA, in Awka.
Items distributed were bags of rice, beans, garri, mosquito nets, blanket, mattresses, cartoons of tin tomatoes, seasoning among others.
According to the Director General of the Agency, Ahmed Mustapha Habib, the relief material was to cushion the effect of the natural disaster and to alleviate the plight of the people affected, noting that it might not quantify what they lost but will add a little or more to the challenges they are facing at this critical moment.
Represented by South East Zonal Cordinator, NEMA, Major James Eze, Mr Habib asked them to learn to plant trees to act as wind breakers, desilt drainages and other water ways so as to reduce the velocity of flooding whenever it comes.
Addressing the members of his constituents, Member representing Awka North and South Federal Constituency, Engineer Sam Onwuasor, said he had the interest of his constituents at heart which was why he beckoned on the Federal Government to assist the victims affected by flood, windstorm and communal clash.
The Executive Secretary of SEMA, Mr Paul Odenigbo who spoke through a Director in the agency, Barrister Chukwudi Onyejekwe, appreciated Federal Government for commiserating with the victims for their losses called on residence of the area to contribute within their reach to see they help in preventing windstorm by putting thunder protector, good roofing systems and planting of trees which will act as wind breakers to contain such incident.
Some of the beneficiaries who spoke to ABS, Mr Christopher Igboanugo, Mrs Caroline Okonkwo and Amaka Anekwe, thanked the federal government and Chief Onwuasor for coming to their aid, noting that it will lessen their plight.
