The Director of the National Orientation Agency in Anambra State Mr Charles Nwoji, has called on Traditional Rulers, Presidents-General and other key Stakeholders in the State to join hands with the Government in the fight against the production, distribution and consumption of crystal methamphetamine and other harmful drugs in the State.
He made the call at a One Day Sensitization and re-orientation Programme organized by the Agency in collaboration with Akwaihedi Town Union.
Mr Nwoji, a lawyer who described the new trend of drug consumption and addiction as a source of worry, maintained that things are going wrong in Nigeria because of the new trend of consumption of crystal methamphetamine in the society.
He noted that governments at different levels are doing everything possible towards waging the war against the production and consumption of crystal methamphetamine.
He advised Community leaders in the State to establish what he called drug control units in their various Communities which according to him should act as a synergy between the Security agencies and various Communities in the fight against all forms of illicit drugs through effective information sharing mechanism.
In a remark, the Traditional Ruler of the Community, Igwe John Onebunne, wondered why the consumption of crystal methamphetamine by the youths should spread like a wild fire especially in the South- East and called for measures to check the ugly trend.
The President-General of the Community, Mr Oliver Mbagwu, said that his administration in the Community is committed to bringing government agencies down to the Community with a view to bringing governance closer to the people and thanked the Leadership of the National Orientation Agency for embarking on the lifesaving programme.
In a lecture which preceded the courtesy call on the Traditional Ruler, the Commander of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency in the State, Mrs. Florence Ezeonye, represented by the Public Relations Officer, Mr Chris Adagbo, maintained that the primary objective of the programme is to help the people, especially the youths to understand the inherent dangers of drug abuse.
The event was attended by Security Agencies, School Children, health officials and the representatives of Ohaneze-Ndigbo, among others.
