The traditional ruler of Umueri Community, Anambra East Council Area, Igwe Ben Emeka has charged journalists to be alive to their duties as watch dog of the society.

Igwe Emeka made this call at his palace when he received the executive members of the Nigerian Union of Journalist, Anambra State.

The delegation was led by the Chairman of the Council, Dr Emeka Odogwu.

Igwe Emeka asked the members of the association to use their various media organs to raise concerns about former Governor Willie Obiano ordeal with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission describing it as “victimization and humiliation” of the former Governor.

Igwe Emeka stated that Governor Obiano performed excellently well while in office and does not deserve such ill-treatment.

He regretted that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission should have sent an invitation to Chief Obiano than choosing to embarrass him the way they are doing.

Earlier in his speech, the State Chairman of Nigerian Union of Journalist, Dr Odogwu condemned the continuous detention of the former governor by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, saying that it was wrong under the constitution to detain anyone beyond 48 hours without charging such person to Court.

In her remarks, the State Vice Chairman of Nigerian Union of Journalist, Mrs Ngozi Obileri extolled Igwe Emeka for being gender sensitive in the appointment of his cabinet.

Also lending his voice, the President-General of Umueri, Mr Johnny Metchie thanked the Nigerian Union of Journalist for their visit, noting that Umueri is a community known for peace and hospitality, asking the media to endeavor to be factual, objective and truthful while carrying out their reportage.
