The Anglican Diocese of Mbammili has called for proactive steps to be taken in the dredging of the River Niger.

 

The Bishop of the Diocese , Right Reverend Obiora Uzochukwu made the call while presenting  bishop’s charge to the 3rd session of the 4th synod of the Diocese held at St. Andrew’s Anglican Church Mmiata Anam, Anambra West council area.

 

Staff reporter Njideka Okoye  reports that Bishop Uzochukwu noted that this will help alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians in the riverine areas who experience flooding annually which he said, is causing economic hardship for the people as the flooding overruns their farms, leaving them without harvesting anything there by increases famine and poverty in  the communities .

Bishop Uzochukwu commended the immediate past Governor of Anambra state, Chief Willie Obiano for concluding his administration with land mark projects including the Anambra International Cargo and Passengers Airport Umueri, but expressed sadness over the negligence of Anambra West especially in road construction.

 

The Bishop also congratulated the new state governor, Professor Charles Soludo, on his swearing in and prayed that God will empower him to accomplish his vision and mission in the state and encouraged him to strengthen himself in the Lord so as to attain greater heights.

In his remarks, the Archbishop Ecclisastical Province of the Niger and Bishop Diocese of Awka, Most Reverend Alexander Ibezim, commended Bishop Uzochukwu and his wife,  Mrs Chizoba, for achieving much within a short period of time and commended his evangelistic work in the area and promised that he will continue to support the Diocese especially in the area of education.

 

Also speaking, the Bishop Diocese of Niger West, Right Reverend Johnson Ekwe, thanked God for the zeal and commitment of Bishop Uzochukwu in holistic evangelism in the area and for capacity building, Community and manpower development and commended him for the theme of the synod.

 

The synod which has its theme as “Go in this thy might” was well attended by a host of Anglican Bishops, clergymen, traditional rulers including the chairman Anambra West traditional rulers, Igwe Joseph Ajodo, the Senator representing Anambra North Senatorial District, Senator Stella Oduah, the Chancellor of the Diocese,  Sir Benjamin Osaka, delegates from all the Archdeanconries of Mbammili Diocese among others.

 

The event featured presentation, appreciation of the bishop by the clergy and launching of the bishop’s charge.
