Ndi Anambra and beyond will tomorrow, April third, 2022, celebrate the birthday of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, the Right Honourable Uchenna Okafor.

Born on third April, 1977, to the family of Agbogidi in Isiudala Village, Ifite-Ogwari, Ayamelum Local Government Area of Anambra state, Right Honourable Okafor in all ramifications could be described as a bright child of destiny.

Young Uche, a son of a renowned school headmaster and ex-parliamentarian in the Old Anambra State House of Assembly, the late Honourable Simon Nweke Okafor, had the luxury of attending the best of schools where he had a track record of excellent results. He was a head boy Trans-Ekulu Primary School, Enugu, and a Senior Prefect at Saint Patrick’s School, Enugu.

After his Secondary Education, Uche proceeded to the University of Nigeria Nsukka, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science Degree in Political Science (Second Class Upper Division), and a  Master`s Degree in Public Administration and Local Government. He was retained as a Research Assistant in the Department of Public Administration and later proceeded to the prestigious Middlesex University, London where he obtained a Master`s Degree in Sustainable Development.

Right Honourable Okafor has a work and research training with the Haringey Council, Barking and Dagenham Council, Hillingdom Council and at the Oxford City Council. He is a member of the Political Science Students Association, Newcastle United Kingdom, Member, Oxford Institute of Research and Development, United Kingdom, and also a member of the Nigeria Political Science Association. He was a student parliamentarian at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and co-ordinator, International Students Forum, Middlesex University, London.  As a knight of Saint Mulumba of the Catholic Church, Uche has continued to make giant strides in the growth and development of the Church of Christ.  Omekannaya Anyamelum is happily married to Pharmacist Amaka Okafor and the union is blessed with four children.

In 2015, Right Honourable Uche Okafor contested in the House of Assembly election under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to represent Ayamelum State Constituency. He has, through effective representation, transformed all the communities in Ayamelum Local Government area. Prior to his first tenure, total absence of electricity and bad roads were the greatest challenge of his people. Today, Right Honourable Okafor has attracted electricity and good roads to Ayamelum which have enhanced industrialization and provided jobs for his people.

He has also recorded giant strides in other areas by ensuring rehabilitation of water boreholes, building of class rooms, building of the Nigeria Union of Teachers’ House for teachers in Ayamelum and other numerous constituency projects. On empowerment, Omekannaya has secured employments for a good number of his constituents at both the state and federal levels. He has equally empowered lots of Ndi Ayamelum through scholarship schemes, sponsored sports festivals and youth development programmes, among others.

As a vocal voice in the Anambra State House of assembly, during his first tenure, he sponsored a lot of bills and motions aimed at improving the living standard of his Ayamelum constituents. He organizes town hall meetings with his constituents regularly where they present their Charter of Demand and has been able to address the herdsmen/farmer crisis in his constituency through motions and meetings.

Right Honourable Okafor, after a successful first term was unanimously re-elected in 2019. He was also elected unopposed as Speaker of the Seventh Anambra State House of Assembly on 12th June, 2019, a position he has creditably discharged in view of the numerous achievements of the present Assembly. The Assembly under the watch of Omekannaya Ayamelum has distinguished itself in terms of quality lawmaking, effective representation and oversight duties.

So, as the Speaker of Anambra State House of Assembly marks his forty-fifth birthday tomorrow, we pray God to continue to strengthen him and wish him more eventful years ahead.  The event slated for 12 noon will hold at Central School, Ifite-Ogwari, Ayamelum Council Area followed immediately by a reception at his residence. Right Honourable Okafor will also use the occasion to empower his constituents in appreciation of their support to APGA and to him. He will distribute vehicles, motorcycles, hair dressing machines, sewing machines, knapsacks, grinding machine, fertilizers and other valuable materials.
