It was a testimony of a life well spent in humility, service to God and humanity during the burial of late Chief Edward Okeke at Nawgu, Dunukofia Local Government Area.

 

Correspondent Kenechukwu Chukwudi covered the event and  reports that Chief Okeke widely known as “Ozocha na Nawgu” died at the age of ninety-six years and was a beneficiary of early education and later became a teacher.

He started his teaching career in 1945 and retired in 1984.

 

An ardent Catholic, who since after his baptism in 1938 remained a strong member of the church, Chief Okeke was well known for his love for the things of the Lord.

 

In his homily during the requiem mass, held in his compound at Ifiteora Nawgu, the Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese, Most Reverend Paulinus Ezeokafor, thanked God for the life of late Chief Okeke, as he lived an exemplary and fulfilled life, urging Christians to live a worthy life rooted in God’s way and teachings.

 

Speaking after the interment of his father, his  sons, Mr. Ikechukwu Okeke and  Mr Michael Okeke explained that their father  helped them in their academic pursuits, especially in dealing with difficult subjects like mathematics.

Other family members, including his daughter, Mrs Ngozika Nkworji and a daughter-in-law, Mrs Agatha Okeke, described the deceased as a kind, peaceful and Godly man whom they will miss a lot.

 

The traditional ruler of Nawgu, Igwe George Okaa-Onwuogu, who attended the burial ceremony noted that the late Chief Okeke was his oldest cabinet member, who was truthful, Godly and maintained a simple lifestyle all his life, describing him as a wonderful adviser, whose services will be missed.

 

Those who condoled with the family, including member representing Dunukofia at the State House of Assembly, Honorable Lawrence Ezeudu and a youth leader from the community, Mr. Augustine Onyemaobi said it is not in doubt that Late Chief Okeke was a good man and urged his family to take solace in his proactive life he lived and keep his legacies alive.
