Anambra State Deputy Governor, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim has called on residents of Onitsha North and South, Ogbaru and Idemili North Local Government Areas to sustain the Waste Evacuation and Drainage Desilting Exercise after the State government has completed the ongoing sanitation exercise in the areas.
Dr Ibezim made the call while monitoring the commencement of the three-day exercise at the four Local Government Areas.
Government House Correspondent, Emmanuel Okonkwo reports that the Deputy Governor who is in charge of the waste evacuation and drainage desilting exercise, kicked off the monitoring exercise from Obiano Park, Upper Iweka axis of Onitsha South Local Government Area through Fegge axis, Ochanja Market, Ochanja roundabout, Okpoko, among others.
At the scene of the exercise, excavators were seen evacuating wastes from drainages, and dump sites around the vicinities, loading same in tipper lorries for onward disposal at designated sites already provided by the State government.
Workers and residents of the areas were also seen clearing and helping to ensure that the vision of Professor Chukwuma Soludo led administration towards enthroning a clean and healthy state is achieved in the areas.
Environmental health officers, officials of Operation Clean and Healthy Anambra, OCHA Brigade, major stakeholders in the areas, including the Member Representing Onitsha North Constituency Two, in the Anambra State House of Assembly Mr Edward Ibuzor were present to ensure a successful sanitation exercise.
Addressing residents of Ochanja, Dr Ibezim said that the exercise is geared towards inculcating sense of cleanliness in the minds of the people, as according to him, clean environment prevents contraction of infectious diseases associated with dirty environment.
He asked the residents in the four Local Government Areas involved to sustain sanitation exercise in the areas after the completion of the state government’s three-day waste evacuation and drainage desilting exercise, as it is for their own good.
Some residents in Ochanja axis of Onitsha including Mr Obinna Enemmuo, Mrs Chibuogu Chiegbu thanked Governor Chukwuma Soludo for keeping his promise, saying that the project when completed will save them from preventable diseases and infections.
