Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has concluded its Validation Workshop and Value Chain Task Force workshop geared towards improving the Economic and Social Development of the Catfish Value Chain in Nigeria.
The event which took place in Abuja was a week-long active engagement in the development of a Vision Statement by stakeholders drawn across Nigeria as one of the outcomes of intensive brainstorming and exchange of ideas and knowledge among others.
The workshop is implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization and partners with funding from the European Union and the German Federal Ministry of Economic Co-operation and Development.
According to the Food and Agriculture Organization-United Nations representative and the National Project Officer for the programme, Dr Abubakar Usman, the Project will assist Nigeria to achieve self-sufficiency in Catfish production and also improve growing exports as demand for fish significantly exceeds domestic production at the moment.
The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Anambra State Fisheries and Aquaculture Business Development Agency, Mr Emeka Iloghalu also noted that the workshop is the first of its kind in Catfish production as the outcome seek to enhance standard and full corporate approach in driving stakeholders and constructive data generation in the Catfish industry before the year 2030.
He said that efforts should be made to make small scale operators grow into medium scale operators and also become corporate Fish and Catfish organizations for further growth into large scale and industrial-scale operators.
Recall that a team from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, last December visited Anambra State for a five-day primary data gathering on Catfish activities and interacted with actors and stakeholders in the Catfish value chain in Anambra State with the intent to gather primary information and understand the strength and weakness of the Industry in the State and geographical region to inform the analysis, policy formulation and development of plans for intervention and support to improve the sector.
