It was a moment of tribute at Oba, ldemili South Council Area as people from all walks of life gathered to pay their last respect to the late Chief Benson Onwuamaegbu.
The late Chief Onwuamaegbu, who died at the age of sixty was until his death, a devout Christian in the Anglican Communion both in Nigeria and in the USA.
Correspondent Festus Obierika reports that the funeral ceremony, which commenced with a Christian wake, attracted personalities from across the country and beyond including, Senator Annie Okonkwo, his in-law, Chief Emma Bishop Okonkwo, the Traditional Ruler of Ojoto, Igwe Gerald Mbamalu and the Regent of Oba, Chief Noel Ezenwa among other dignitaries.
In a sermon during the burial service at Saint John’s Anglican Church Isu Umuonyenora Oba, a priest from the USA, Venerable Arinze Ilechukwu called on Christians to always get themselves prepared as no one knows when death will come knocking, describing the deceased as a godly man, who loved and trained his children in a godly way.
Venerable Ilechukwu, who urged his family to develop on his legacies, eulogized the deceased for having lived a purposeful life.
In his speech , his first son, Mr. Obinna Onwuamaegbu, described his late father as his mentor, formator, a socialist, and character moulder, who loved his children, lived a prayerful and peaceful life and promised to uphold his legacies.
In their separate tributes, his three daughters, Mrs. Uzoamaka Daodu, Ngozi and Ifeoma Onwuamaegbu stated that their late father was unique in all ramifications describing him as an epitome of honesty, humanity and love and pledged to keep his legacies alive.
For his three brothers, Chief Nnaemeka, Nonso and Gilbert Onwuamaegbu, their late brother taught them about love towards all and malice towards none, noting that he was a disciplinarian, who exhibited good character and loved by all.
In separate interviews, two of his sisters, Lady Chinyere Okonkwo and Barrister Mrs. Nkejika Orakwue, said they have missed a good brother, a straightforward man, who impacted positively on the lives of his siblings, family and those, who came in contact with him and prayed God to grant him rest.
Also in an interview, Senator Okonkwo pronounced his late in-law as peaceful, hardworking and straightforward man, who never discriminated in his life and advised his wife and children to hold on with the legacies he left behind.
Commiserating with the family, Igwe Mbamalu, Chief Ezenwa and Chief Okonkwo said they came to sympathies with one of their own, Senator Okonkwo and indeed the Onwuamaegbu’s family over the demise of their in-law and brother, urging them not to take solace in God the author and finisher of their faith while praying for his peaceful response.
In his condolence message, a member of the All-Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, Board of Trustees, Chief Rommy Ezeonwuka described the late Chief Onwuamaegbu as a rare patriot, an unquantifiable philanthropist and a role model, urging his family to bear the loss with fortitude.
The funeral ceremony featured thanksgiving by the family, prayer for the family, internment, condolence visits by in-laws and special rendition by choirs of St John and USA.
