Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Soludo has tasked the Nigeria Labour Congress to from “Agitation Movement” to “Movement of Constructive Developments”.
Governor Soludo made the call when Anambra State workforce joined their counterparts to mark this year’s Workers’ Day in Awka
Government House Correspondent, Ejike Abana reports that members of Anambra State Executive Council, led by Governor Chukwuma Soludo joined to cheer and celebrate Anambra workers at the colourful event which held at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka.
While stating that the state resources are meagre to address the demands made by the NLC, Governor Soludo assured that he will articulate the ones his government can implement, stressing that the welfare of the state workforce will be prioritized under his watch.
Describing the state workforce as the people that drive the state, Governor Soludo said that the day is important to celebrate workers all over the world, especially the Anambra workers.
While calling for all hands to be on deck the Governor restated that his administration is committed to building the smart, liveable and prosperous homeland as well as making the cities clean and green.
In his address, the State Chairman of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Chinwe Orizu prayed God to perfect the Governor’s laudable vision, assuring of the support of the Congress.
She called the attention of the Governor to some challenges in the Union including confirmation of the appointment of Mr. Gab Okpalaeze as the substantive Managing Director of Anambra Broadcasting Service which she said will aid the growth of staff of the establishment, payment of outstanding arrears of pension, harmonisation of pension, review of pension every five years, scrapping of the contributory pension scheme and refund of the money already deducted, revisit of deductions made from workers’ salary for the recapitalisation of Ndiolu Microfinance Bank, among others.
Also speaking, Chairman of the Trade Union Congress, Anambra State Chapter, Comrade Chris Ogbonna said the effects of the galloping inflations in the Country has rendered the issue of minimum wage useless and called for intervention in the plight of Nigeria workers.
In attendance were the Deputy Governor, Dr. Onyekachukwu Ibezim, members of Anambra State House of Assembly led by the Speaker, Right Honourable Uche Okafor, members of the State Chapter of Nigeria Labour Congress among others.
The theme for this year’s event which featured march-past by unions is “Labour Politics and the Quest for good governance in Nigeria”.
