Rotary Club of Awka Central in collaboration with Mikon Solar World has inaugurated a Solar Power project that will supply electricity at Umuawulu Primary Health Centre in Awka South Local Government Area, to ameliorate the suffering the health facility is going through because of lack of power supply.
Queen Anigbogu was there and reports that the inauguration of the solar equipment which took place at the premises of the Primary Health Centre, Umuawulu, attracted staff of the Primary Health Centre, members of the community and Rotarians.
Unveiling the project, the District-Governor, Mr Okey Okonkwo, announced that Rotary Club will adopt the Primary Health Centre for regular interventions adding that the Club is passionate in solving Community needs.
He urged Ndi Umuawulu to sustain the project, pointing out that Rotary Club is open to everyone to join.
In his remarks, the President, Rotary Club of Awka Central, Rotarian Iruka Michael, said upon findings that the health facility has been without light for years, Rotary Club of Awka Central and Mikon Solar World stepped in to halt the adverse effects on the services of the PHC by installing the Solar Power equipment.
Rotarian Iruka who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Mikon Solar World, said the intervention is part of the Corporate Social Responsibilities of his company and enumerated Rotary international’s areas of focus including Disease Prevention and Treatment, Maternal and Child Health Care and environmental protection, expressing optimism that they will do more for the health facility.
While calling on government and philanthropists to partner with them to extend the kind gesture to other health facilities which are facing similar challenges, Rotarian Iruka, pointed out that the Club also employed active-community participation for sustainability of the project.
Also speaking, the Director, Awka South local government area Health Authority, Dr Frank Umeh, noted that Rotary Club of Awka Central in collaboration with Mikon Solar World has solved a basic need of electricity at the Umuawulu Primary Health Care Center, adding that government or wealthy individuals’ partnership with Mikon Solar World can go a long way in extending such projects to every health facility across Anambra state.
Also speaking the Secretary of Umuawulu Progressive Union, Mr Chukwuemeka Nwafor, said the community is overwhelmed by the kind gesture, noting that it would further galvanize the activities of the members of the community to provide more needful projects to the town.
In her remarks, the Officer-in-charge of the Primary Health Centre, Mrs Juliana Ikwunne, thanked God for making the project a reality and Rotary Club for being the instrument through which it was actualized.
In his comments, a onetime President of the club, Rotarian Timothy Nwabunwanne, the club’s interventions in various sectors especially health have helped to reduce the polio burden drastically in Nigeria.
