Effective listenership has been described as the heart of communication, without which messages passed through communication won’t achieve needed results.
This was the view of participants at an event to mark the 2022 World Communication Day in Awka, the Anambra State capital.
in his lecture at the event, Sir Chuka Nnabuife, who is the Managing Director of Anambra Newspapers and Printing Corporation, noted that though listening is a natural skill endowed by God for hearing, effective listenership is developed deliberately in order to understand a message.
He emphasized that effective listenership is an important skill that both senders and receivers of information should possess in order to get better feel of the information, what it seeks to achieve and derive understanding for mutual benefit.
In his remark, the Anambra State Commissioner for Culture, Entertainment and Tourism, Comrade Don Onyenji, noted that communication is central to human existence and effective communication elicits feedback, urging all to always listen attentively to ensure that communicated messages achieve their goals.
On his part, the Acting Managing Director of the ABS, Mr. Gab Okpalaeze, said the theme of this year’s event, “listening with the ears of the heart”, beckons all to listen not just from their point of view, but the point of view of the sender in order to understand information better, even as he called on people to properly scrutinize information and check biases before sending out in this era of social media.
The organizer of the event, Reverend Father Dr Martins Anusi of Fides Communication, noted that World Communication Day enables those who code information, especially those in the media, to rub minds together in order to solve emerging challenges and be able to communicate better.
The Anambra State Council Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Dr. Odogwu Emeka Odogwu said people, especially those in leadership positions, must begin to listen effectively in order to solve challenges and problems facing mankind.
